Consol girls run for another state berth
ARLINGTON - The A&M Consolidated girls earned their sixth trip in eight years to the UIL state cross country meet by finishing third at the Class 5A Region II meet Saturday.
Consol's girls easily qualified for state, as the top three teams at Vandergriff Park ran away from the field. College Park finished first with 64 points, followed by The Woodlands at 74 and Consol at 75. Defending Region II champion Plano West was fourth with 150 points.
"We ran as well as we can run," Consol girls coach Rodney Wellmann said. "From one to seven, we ran as well as we could have possibly hoped for, both in terms of place and time. That really gives us hope for next week. We feel that those are two teams we can beat [at state]."
Jordan Bettiol led the Lady Tigers, finishing ninth in 11 minutes, 40.85 seconds. Sally Hays was 11th in 11:43, and Keri Wood finished 16th at 11:52.4.
"When you have a 1-2 punch like Jordan and Sally, you don't need an individual to be first, second or third," Wellmann said. "[And] all of the girls ran great. We had some projections of where we thought we needed to be, and across the board everyone was where they needed to be."
Consol's Morgan Hartmann finished 22nd in 12:00.55, while Kenda Carroll took 30th at 12:09.7, Katy Williams was 43rd in 12:21.65 and Jenn Barrick was 57th with a time of 12:33.7.
Consol's boys were ninth with 271 points. The Woodlands took the boys team title with 30 points. The other state qualifiers were Cedar Park (81) and Georgetown (91).
Jesse Hall led the Tigers, placing 44th with a time of 16:01.8. Stephen Case finished 50th in 16:08.1, and Chris Florian was 54th at 16:14.5.
Consol's other finishers were Morrell Munyon (63rd, 16:21.85), Chase Teinert (77th, 16:43.85), Tyler Edwards (89th, 16:52.55) and David Mora-Boellstorf (139th, 17:59.2).
In other regional action, the Brenham Cubs took second at the 4A Region III meet at Houston's North Harris College. Freshman Will Antkowiak (16:12.20) was fifth and junior David Wells (16:30.02) was ninth.
Freshman Lauren Arnold (12:47.68) paced the Brenham girls, who finished sixth.
At the 3A Region III meet, Cameron freshman Madison Pevehouse (12:09.00) was eighth and junior Leticia Bustamante ninth to give the Lady Yoe a second-place finish and state berth. Humble Kingwood Park won with 69 points followed by Cameron's 91.
Cameron's boys finished sixth.
